TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The Nikkei stock index extended its losses in mid-afternoon trading Friday, briefly dropping more than 1,000 points, as recent sharp rises in U.S. and Japanese bond yields triggered concerns about market stability.

At 2 p.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average had dropped 963.25 points, or 3.19 percent, to 29,205.02.
