Tokyo reports 843 coronavirus cases on April 21, topping 800-mark for 1st time since Jan.

TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 843 coronavirus infections on April 21. It was the first time since Jan. 29 that the daily infection number topped 800.

    The new cases came after Tokyo reported 711 infections on April 20. In the first week of April, Tokyo recorded an average of 417 new coronavirus cases per day, up from an average of 300.3 for the month of March, when 9,310 infections were recorded in the capital. In April's second week, Tokyo registered an average of 497.1 new cases per day, jumping to 665.3 cases per day in the third week.

    Tokyo saw a monthly high of 39,664 new cases of the virus in January -- an average of 1,279.5 infections per day, and the highest single-month total since the pandemic began in spring 2020.

    In total, Tokyo has recorded 132,042 infections, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. The overall death toll in the capital stood at 1,852 as of April 20. A total of 1,571 patients were hospitalized in Tokyo with COVID-19 as of the same day, 50 with severe symptoms.
