TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 609 coronavirus infections in Japan's capital on May 4.
The new cases came after Tokyo recorded 708 infections on May 3. The capital remains under a state of emergency over the spread of the virus.
Tokyo recorded a total of 18,090 coronavirus infections in the month of April, or an average of 603 infections per day -- up from an average of 300.3 for the month of March, when 9,310 cases were recorded in the capital. Tokyo saw a monthly high of 39,664 new cases of the virus in January -- an average of 1,279.5 infections per day, and the highest single-month total since the pandemic began in spring 2020.
In total, Tokyo has recorded 142,322 infections, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. The overall death toll in the capital stood at 1,898 as of May 3. A total of 2,062 patients were hospitalized in Tokyo with COVID-19 as of the same day, 65 with severe symptoms.
