TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 435 new coronavirus infections on June 11.
The new cases came after the Japanese capital recorded 439 infections on June 10. Tokyo remains under an extended state of emergency over the spread of the virus.
In the first week of June, Tokyo recorded an average of 422.9 new infections per day, down from the daily average of 705.8 in the month of May. It saw a monthly high of 39,664 new virus cases in January -- an average of 1,279.5 infections per day, and the highest single-month total since the pandemic began in spring 2020.
By June 10, a total of 2,134 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo.
To date, Tokyo has recorded 165,598 infections, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of June 10, there were 1,563 coronavirus patients in hospital, 55 with severe symptoms.
