TOKYO -- The 201st volume of long-running police comedy manga "Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Koen-mae Hashutsujo," or "Kochi Kame," is set to be released on Oct. 4, five years after the series' purported end in September 2016, it was announced by publisher Shueisha Inc.

Drawn by manga artist Osamu Akimoto, the popular manga follows Kankichi Ryotsu, an officer who works at the police box in front of Kameari Park, and his colleagues. Many characters with unique personalities appear in the series.

Kochi Kame's serialization in the "Shukan Shonen Jump" weekly magazine began in 1976 and had continued non-stop until its last installment in September 2016. The series' 200th volume was released in "Jump" and as a stand-alone book on the same day, capturing the public's attention and leading to long lines at bookshops.

The 201st volume will contain stand-alone pieces which were included irregularly in Shukan Shonen Jump and other publications from 2016 onward. Works drawn for display at the "Kochi Kame exhibition" held between 2016 and 2018 are also planned to be incorporated.

A stand-alone Kochi Kame story is also featured in the July 19 edition of Shukan Shonen Jump, which looks likely to garner fans' attention.

According to Shueisha, a total of over 150 million copies of Kochi Kame's 200 volumes have been printed, and the series was certified by Guinness World Records in 2016 as having the greatest number of volumes for a single manga series. However, the record was broken by "Golgo 13," a series by Takao Saito, when its 201st volume went on sale on July 5. After the release of its 201st volume in October, Kochi Kame will be tied with Golgo 13.
