TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan on Thursday won its 42nd medal of the Tokyo Olympics, breaking its previous record of 41 set at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Japan's Koki Ikeda won the silver medal in the men's 20-kilometer race walk for the nation's 42nd medal and reigning world champion in the event, Toshikazu Yamanishi, took bronze for the 43rd.
The country added three more medals to bring the total to 46 as of Thursday.
The United States ranked first with 91 medals in total, of which 29 are gold, ahead of China with 74, including 34 gold.
Japan's gold medal total is already its highest of any single games. It set a new record when it won its 17th on July 30. It currently stands at 22.
