TOKYO -- The number of children infected with the coronavirus in the Japanese capital has increased sharply, from generally less than 100 per day in early July to 856 on Aug. 19.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the ratio of minors to the total number of COVID-19 cases in the capital has hovered around just over 10% since July, and there have been no signs of a decrease even during the summer vacation period.

Cases of clusters involving children have also been confirmed, such as at least 10 elementary school students being infected at a cram school, and infections spreading at a junior high school resulting in the infection of the students' families.
