Newcomer Ryuichi Yoneyama scores Japan election victory over LDP ex-lawmaker in Niigata

Ryuichi Yoneyama, 54, a first-time independent, has defeated the Liberal Democratic Party's Hirohiko Izumida and another candidate to win the Niigata No. 5 constituency in the Oct. 31 House of Representatives election.

    Both Yoneyama and Izumida, 59, a former lower house member, previously served as governors of Niigata Prefecture, located on the Sea of Japan coast. Another candidate, Tamio Mori, 72, is former mayor of the prefectural city of Nagaoka, making it a three-party race among former local government chiefs.
