Ex-environment minister Koizumi secures seat in Japan general election

Former environment minister Shinjiro Koizumi, 40, is certain to win a seat in the Oct. 31 House of Representatives election, defeating a newcomer in the Kanagawa No. 11 constituency.

    Koizumi, the son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, beat Nobuaki Hayashi, 55, of the Japanese Communist Party to secure his fifth victory in a general election.
