BEIJING (Mainichi) -- Japanese figure skating star Yuzuru Hanyu appeared at official morning practice for the men's single short program at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics on Feb. 8, the Games' fifth day.

Number 21 in group four, Hanyu is aiming for his third consecutive gold medal in figure skating at the Winter Olympics -- a feat last achieved in the sport in 1928. It was Hanyu's first time skating at the official competition venue since he arrived in Beijing, and he was seen getting a sense of how the ice feels. The short program starts on Feb. 8.

Hanyu's short program music, "Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso," was played during his practice, and he performed a number of successfully completed jumps, including a quadruple salchow, quadruple and triple toe loop, as well as triple axels. After that, he looked around the venue, among other actions, and left training after about 20 minutes.

The champion figure skater arrived in Beijing on Feb. 6. Official training at the competition venue for male competitors was last held on Feb. 5, with no other training events until Feb. 8. The men's free skating is set for Feb. 10.
