Japan protests over Beijing's detention of embassy diplomat

TOKYO -- A Japanese diplomat at the Embassy of Japan in China was detained temporarily by Chinese authorities in Beijing on Feb. 21, sparking a protest from Tokyo, Japan's Foreign Ministry said on Feb. 22.

    Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Takeo Mori summoned Yang Yu, charge d'affaires ad interim at the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo, to Japan's Foreign Ministry to protest Beijing's action, calling it a clear violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

    The Foreign Ministry said that in addition to its strong protest, it had sought an apology from Beijing and measures to prevent a recurrence. It did not disclose further details.
