KUMAMOTO -- Kumamoto Castle in this southwest Japan city is being lit in the colors of the Ukrainian national flag to show condolence for the victims of Russia's invasion and protest against the conflict.

Until March 5, the initiative run by the Kumamoto Municipal Government will see the castle's large keep bathed in blue light and its smaller one in yellow between sunset and midnight.

In a statement, Mayor Kazufumi Onishi said, "Russia's military invasion of Ukraine threatens international society's peace, order and safety. It is also intolerable from a humane perspective. We strongly urge that a peaceful settlement be made as soon as possible."

The mayor also sent a written protest to the Embassy of Russia in Japan.
