TOKYO -- Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency issued action orders on April 5 demanding a company in Osaka amend its claim that one can easily lose weight just by drinking miso soup, saying it has no basis in fact and is a violation of the anti-false advertisement law.

According to an announcement by the agency, W-Endless Co. sold food products labeled "Dr. Miso-Shiru" under the "beauty award" section of its website from Nov. 20 to Dec. 28, 2020. The ads claimed that one could lose weight simply by drinking miso soup, without strict diet restrictions or heavy exercise.

However, when the agency asked W-Endless for the basis for the content of the labeling, the company reportedly did not provide a sufficient explanation.

According to the firm, it sold approximately 88,700 boxes (30 servings per box) of the food product during the roughly 15-month period before transferring the business to another company in September 2021.
