Japan Photo Journal: Water-filled rice terraces in Chiba Pref. reflect changing sky

(Mainichi/Daisuke Wada)

The morning sky is reflected on the water-filled Oyama Senmaida rice terraces in the eastern Japan city of Kamogawa in Chiba Prefecture on May 6, 2022. The rice planting season has started across the country, and the "water mirror" phenomenon, in which rice paddies reflect the sky, can be observed in many areas. Oyama Senmaida, one of the "top 100 rice terraces in Japan" as selected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, is delighting tourists with ever-changing reflections of the sky. Located near the center of the Boso Peninsula, 375 rows of rice fields occupy the 3.2-hectare terrace area. As a measure against deserted cultivated lands, an ownership system to let people in urban areas borrow the paddies was introduced in 2000. On April 29, the first day of the "Golden Week" holiday period, some 200 people including such owners planted rice here.
