TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education dismissed a male teacher at a public junior high school for secretly filming female students while they were changing clothes at the school, it has been learned.

The 38-year-old teacher at a ward-run junior high school in the capital was slapped with disciplinary dismissal on May 12.

According to the education board, the teacher hid a smartphone in video recording status inside a corrugated box with a hole and placed it on a classroom shelf in May 2019. Female students were videoed on the smartphone for about 20 minutes.

"It was intended to fulfill my lust," the teacher was quoted as telling education officials in admitting to the allegations.

The incident came to the surface after the teacher was reported to police for allegedly taking an upskirt photo of a woman at a train station in Tokyo in September 2021. When police checked his smartphone, it turned out that he had also committed video voyeurism at his school.

He was indicted for violating the metropolitan ordinance to prevent public nuisances, and was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for three years, by the Tokyo District Court in May.

"The case is extremely regrettable. We'll step up our efforts to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents," the education board commented.
