Not only are we impressed by the author's powers of observation upon reading this verse, but the cyclicity of nature, life and death and the interrelatedness of all things is also portrayed within this poem. The "shadow" suggests a warning to all that what goes around comes around, in one form or another, as the ivy is blocking the sunlight, and therefore energy, to its own leaves down at ground level.
