YOKOHAMA -- A dog was injured by needles stuck in pet food that was left on the side of a road in Zama, Kanagawa Prefecture, when the animal was on a walk with its owner on the evening of June 27, local police have said.

The prefectural police's Zama Police Station is investigating using footage from nearby security cameras. Officers suspect that someone put the needles into the stick-shaped pet food, which had been taken out of its package, and put it on the road.

The dog was taken to a veterinary clinic for treatment. The owner, a woman living in Zama, reported the incident to local police on the same day.
