ATSUGI, Kanagawa -- A 1-year-old boy is dead and a 2-year-old girl in critical condition due to suspected heatstroke after they were left in a hot car in this city near Yokohama.

The children's mother made an emergency call to the local fire department at around 4:50 p.m. on July 29 saying they had gone limp after being in the family car for about 30 minutes in a parking lot at Bousai no Oka Park in the city. According to Kanagawa Prefectural Police's Atsugi Police Station, the children were transported unconscious to a hospital, where the boy was later confirmed dead. The police station is investigating the case on the assumption that the girl and boy both had heatstroke.

The mother, an Atsugi resident in her 20s, was quoted as telling police, "We came to the park by car to play, but my two kids were asleep in the back seat. I was using my smartphone and doing some other things in the car while waiting for them to wake up. I'd turned off the air conditioner, but the windows were open."

Emergency personnel dispatched to the scene apparently said the car was hot inside when they opened the door.
