PHNOM PENH (Kyodo) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said Friday China's decision to cancel foreign ministerial talks with Japan on the sidelines of ASEAN-related meetings is "regrettable," as the fallout from U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Taiwan visit continues.

With the cancellation of the planned Thursday meeting in Phnom Penh between him and Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi, Hayashi told a press conference that "communication is now more important than ever amid growing tensions" between the countries.

His remarks came after he attended a series of ministerial meetings involving the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and its regional partners through Friday.
