TOKYO -- Star figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu's new official YouTube channel grabbed 30,000-plus subscribers within an hour after his agent's office announced its launch on Aug. 7.

The "HANYU YUZURU" channel's subscriber count had reached nearly 300,000 as of the morning of Aug. 8.

In his first video posted to the channel, the 2014 Sochi and 2018 Pyeongchang winter Olympic gold medalist told viewers, "I've launched this because I thought I'd like people to watch my skating and performances here, too. I'll continue to skate at my best."

Hanyu announced in July that he would retire from competition and turn pro.
