Tokyo registers 29,416 new coronavirus cases on Aug. 17

TOKYO -- The Japanese capital recorded 29,416 COVID-19 infections on Aug. 17 after registering 23,511 cases the previous day, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced.

    It was announced on Aug. 17 that a portion of the daily cases recorded in Chiba Prefecture had been included in Tokyo's daily infection figures since late February. Of the 29,416 infections announced on Aug. 17, 2,199 were cases registered at registration centers outside of the capital. Excluding these cases, Tokyo's total stood at 26,634.

    There were 25 COVID-19 deaths reported in the capital on Aug. 17, and total coronavirus fatalities in Tokyo stand at 4,962.

    The capital is battling a seventh wave of coronavirus infections, with a daily average of 31,732.7 cases recorded in the first week of August, and 25,629 in the second. In July, Tokyo registered a total of 567,960 cases, or a daily average of 18,321.3. It saw 58,556 total COVID-19 cases in June, for an average of 1,951.9 infections per day.

    Tokyo has registered 2,644,327 coronavirus infections to date.
