TOKYO -- Takashi Tachibana, the head of Japan's NHK Party, announced on March 8 that he would step down as leader to take responsibility for party member GaaSyy's absence from a plenary session of the House of Councillors.

In the news conference at the upper house members' office building in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward, Tachibana also announced that the name of his party would be changed to the "Seijika Joshi (female politicians) 48 Party."

GaaSyy, whose real name is Yoshikazu Higashitani, has never appeared in the Diet since his election in July 2022 and has remained overseas, and a disciplinary committee is considering expelling him.

"It's a shame, perhaps, that he didn't return but I think that's all right," Tachibana said. "I'm surprised that there are so many idiotic politicians moving to expel him. I don't think at all that he's caused any trouble."
