Dollar jumps to upper 148 yen level on strong US jobs data

NEW YORK (Kyodo) -- The U.S. dollar surged to the upper 148 yen range Friday morning in New York, a level not seen since mid-August, as stronger-than-expected U.S. nonfarm payrolls data tempered market expectations of additional large interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.
The dollar advanced to around 148.80 yen, compared with 146.30-32 yen at 5 p.m. in Tokyo, following the release of the employment data showing that the U.S. economy created 254,000 private nonfarm jobs in September, well above market forecasts of around 140,000.
