With a headline reading "Tokyo Groans In Desolate Ruins," articles report on the damage suffered in Japan's capital following the Great Kanto Earthquake on Sept. 1, 1923. Emperor Taisho (1879-1926) also donated 10 million yen as part of relief measures.
