Stealing the Show
After years of effort, Japanese director Koreeda Hirokazu rose to the pinnacle of France's prestigious Cannes Film Festival on May 19, claiming the Palme d'Or for his film "Shoplifters."
It was the first time in 21 years and only the fifth time overall for a Japanese director to claim the top award － the last time being in 1997 when Imamura Shohei won the prize for "The Eel."
"My legs are shaking, as I might have expected. I'm really happy to be here," Koreeda, 55, said as he accepted the prize.
"Shoplifters" is the portrait of a poor family whose members shoplift to make ends meet. The family members welcome in an abused young girl and decide to raise her as one of their own. Lily Franky and Ando Sakura play the husband and wife in the film, which explores the meaning of family ties. Kiki Kirin plays the grandmother.
Cate Blanchett, who led the jury at this year's 71st international film festival, praised the film, one of 21 in the competition section, including fellow Japanese director Hamaguchi Ryusuke's "Asako I & II."
"In the end I think we were completely bowled over by how intermeshed the performances were with the directorial vision," Blanchett said of "Shoplifters" in a closing news conference.
Koreeda's achievement came after years of effort at the festival including seven nominations for his films. In 2004, his film "Nobody Knows" won a Best Actor Award for Yagira Yuya, and his work "Like Father, Like Son" won the Jury Prize in 2013.
In a news conference after the festival, Koreeda commented, "I thought about how to visualize the families in Japanese society today who are driven into corners or overlooked."
The prize has given him a boost as he looks to the future.
"My determination to create works that are worthy of a director who has won this award has been renewed."
"Shoplifters" hits Japanese theaters on June 8.
