End of an Era

The last auction was held at the Tsukiji wholesale market on the morning of Oct. 6, putting an end to the 83-year history of "the kitchen of Japan."

At Tsukiji market's marine product section, intermediary wholesalers performed ceremonial hand-clapping prior to the last auction for tuna. When a bell was rung to mark the start of the auction, participants shouted their proposed prices and made successful bids for large tuna one after another.

"I'm overwhelmed with emotions," said one of the wholesalers tearfully. "I want to say, 'Good work over these 83 years.'"

Tsukiji market, in Tokyo's Chuo Ward, was opened in 1935 by merging a fish wholesale market in the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo, which burned down in a fire triggered by the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, and a vegetable market in the Kyobashi area. The total land area of the market's lot is about 23 hectares, about five times the size of Tokyo Dome. The market dealt with a total of 2,500 metric tons of fish and vegetables, worth 1.9 billion yen, a day. The amount of marine products traded at the market each day totaled some 1,500 tons and was worth about 1.6 billion yen.

Intermediary wholesalers who offered bids after closely examining the quality of fish enhanced the Tsukiji brand, supporting Japan's food culture.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which operated the market, decided about 30 years ago to renew the site because the structures were aging and it was necessary to improve the market's system to maintain the freshness of products.

The new market was built in the Toyosu district of the capital's Koto Ward and opened on Oct. 11. The site in Tsukiji will be converted into a parking lot for vehicles to transport athletes to venues for the 2020 Tokyo Games.
