Japan's changing English landscape
When I first came to Japan 16 years ago, I remember being completely overwhelmed by the language barrier. One experience in particular stands out in my mind: standing in the middle of Shinjuku Station at rush hour. I was trying to figure out which way I needed to go, but I only saw signs in Japanese and did not know how to ask for help. This experience came back to me recently when some visiting friends noted how surprised they were that it was easy to get around Tokyo even without knowing any Japanese. It prompted me to reflect on just how far Japan has come in regard to the use of English here.
