Landfill work starts in new area off Henoko
NAHA -- The Defense Ministry's Okinawa Defense Bureau on March 25 began land reclamation work in a new section of waters off the Henoko district of Nago for the construction of a base to replace U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.
The move comes on the heels of landfill work that started in a separate section of waters in December, and in blatant defiance of the outcome of a Feb. 24 referendum in which more than 70 percent of voters rejected the landfill work.
While Okinawa Gov. Tamaki Denny has asked Prime Minister Abe Shinzo to stop the relocation work, the central government has refused the pleas and is expanding areas to be reclaimed for the base transfer.
The national government intends to pour soil into a 33-hectare section of waters surrounded by seawalls. The section lies west of the 6.3-hectare area of waters into which the government began pouring soil on Dec. 14. The ministry plans to complete work in the area by the end of August 2020.
Once completed, the two sections will account for one-fourth of the entire reclamation area, which stretches across roughly 160 hectares.
