'Reiwa' era name wins public approval
Some 64 percent of respondents to an online poll by internet search portal Yahoo! Japan approve of the next era name "Reiwa," set to go into effect on May 1 when Crown Prince Naruhito ascends to the Imperial Throne.
In the 24 hours after the April 1 announcement, some 213,300 votes were cast in the survey, with 64.3 percent in favor of the next era name. Some 28 percent said they did not think it was a good choice, with approximately 8 percent stating they did not know or could not say.
In the two hours after the announcement, there were some 4.5 million Twitter references to "Reiwa," according to Twitter Japan. References apparently peaked twice, at the moment Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga Yoshihide revealed the era name, and when it was revealed it had been taken from a passage about plum blossoms in the "Man-yoshu," the oldest extant anthology of Japanese poetry.
Demands for materials related to the "Manyoshu" boomed after the announcement. Kinokuniya Co.'s bookshop in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward piled a wagon high with copies of the anthology, and some volumes were sold out by early evening on April 2.
