Japan to release new banknotes in 2024
The Japanese government on April 9 revealed new designs of the 10,000 yen, 5,000 yen and 1,000 yen bills to be issued in 2024.
The 10,000 yen banknote will feature industrialist Shibusawa Eiichi (1840-1931), the 5,000 yen note educator Tsuda Umeko (1864-1929), and the 1,000 yen note physician and bacteriologist Kitasato Shibasaburo (1853-1931).
The reverse sides of the new banknotes will show the Tokyo Station building, wisteria flowers, and "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" from the "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" series by ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), respectively.
This will be the first banknote redesign since 2004, when the 5,000 yen and 1,000 yen bills were redesigned.
A revamped 500 yen coin will also go into circulation in 2021.
"We generally redesign the notes about every 20 years to prevent counterfeiting," Finance Minister Aso Taro said at an April 9 news conference.
