Foxconn head to run for Taiwan president
TAIPEI (AP) -- Terry Gou, chairman of the world's largest electronics supplier, Foxconn, said on April 17 he is planning to run for president of Taiwan.
Gou, 68, announced that he would be putting himself up as a hopeful in the opposition Nationalist Party primary ahead of next year's election.
The Nationalists favor closer ties with Beijing, a policy that accords with Gou's strong business interests in China, where Foxconn produces products for Apple, Google and Amazon.
Gou announced on April 15 that he would step back from day-to-day operations at Foxconn, which acquired Japan's Sharp Corp. in 2016.
Any candidate is expected to face a crowded field in the 2020 polls, in which President Tsai Ing-wen of the pro- independence Democratic Progressive Party says she will seek a second four-year term.
