Emperor Naruhito greets 140,000 well-wishers
Emperor Naruhito greeted the public on May 4 for the first time since his succession, expressing hope for Japan to keep pursuing peace.
From a balcony overlooking the grounds of the Imperial Palace, Emperor Naruhito thanked a large number of well-wishers for congratulating him.
"I am deeply grateful and pleased that I am receiving celebration from you all today," said the Emperor, wearing a formal suit and standing next to his wife, Empress Masako. "I wish for your health and happiness, and sincerely hope that our country pursues world peace hand in hand with other countries and will develop further."
As he waved from the balcony, where he was accompanied by other members of the Imperial Family, spectators cheered, took photos and waved Japanese flags. The former Emperor Akihito, who became Emperor Emeritus, and his wife Michiko, who became Empress Emerita, were not present, to avoid concerns about interference with the current Emperor.
According to the Imperial Household Agency, more than 140,000 people came to celebrate. This was more than the around 110,000 who turned up to celebrate in November 1990 after then Emperor Akihito's enthronement. (AP)
