The love story between an American actress and a British royal took the best of all possible turns with the arrival of a healthy baby boy on May 6. The baby arrived less than a year after Prince Harry married Meghan Markle.
Meghan, 37, is now the Duchess of Sussex, but she still does things her own way: The couple bucked royal tradition by declining to say where the baby was born, informing people about the birth of their baby through Instagram, and choosing not to come out to pose with the newborn just hours after the birth.
An overjoyed Harry, 34, told the world, "This little thing is absolutely to die for. ... I'm just over the moon." The baby weighed 3.26 kilograms at birth and was born at 5:26 a.m.
Harry and Meghan introduced their son and revealed his name, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world on May 8. Meghan called Archie "a dream" who "has the sweetest temperament." Archie, a name of Germanic origin with meanings that include "genuine," "bold" and "brave," is an increasingly popular baby name in Britain. It was among the top 20 most common boy's names in 2017, according to the U.K.'s Office for National Statistics.
The infant is seventh in line to the British throne and is the eighth great-grandchild of 93-year-old Queen Elizabeth II. Harry and Meghan did not choose an aristocratic title for their son. Though he is not a prince, he could have been given the title "Lord" before his first name. But instead he will simply be "Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor."
Meghan has brought something new and different to the royal family. She is an American with African roots who enjoyed a successful career in show business before joining the royal family. The child will be eligible for dual citizenship, but Harry and Meghan have not said whether they plan to apply for American status.
Harry and Meghan recently moved from central London to a secluded house known as Frogmore Cottage near Windsor Castle, 40 kilometers west of London. The move is seen as reflecting a desire for privacy as they raise their first child. (AP)
