Mochizuki wins Japan's first boys' Grand Slam junior title
Mochizuki Shintaro, 16, became the first Japanese tennis player to win a Grand Slam junior boys' title by beating Carlos Gimeno Valero, 18, of Spain, 6-3, 6-2 in the Wimbledon final on July 14.
Mochizuki's title came 50 years after Sawamatsu Kazuko won the girls' singles competition at Wimbledon in 1969.
"Being able to play against top players and win throughout the tournament gave me confidence," Mochizuki said.
Mochizuki used his serve-and-volley style to great effect, winning 17 of 23 points when he went to the net. "I like coming into the net," Mochizuki said.
The victory lifted Mochizuki to the No. 1 spot in the boys' world tennis ranking released by the International Tennis Federation on July 15.
Mochizuki was born in Kawasaki and started playing tennis at age 3. Since his first year of junior high school, he has trained at the IMG Academy in Florida, which has produced top players including Nishikori Kei. (Compiled from AP and Mainichi reports)
