Deadly arson attack at Kyoto anime studio kills 35 people
A man screaming "Die!" burst into an animation studio in Kyoto, doused it with gasoline and set it on fire on July 18, killing 35 people.
Thirty-three others were injured in a blaze that proved to be Japan's deadliest fire in recent history.
The suspect, 41-year-old Aoba Shinji, was injured and taken to a hospital.
Most of the victims were employees of Kyoto Animation, which works on movies and TV productions, and is best known for its mega-hits including "Lucky Star," "K-ON!" and "Haruhi Suzumiya." They are so popular that fans make pilgrimages to some of the places depicted in the shows.
The three-story building has a spiral staircase that may have allowed flames and smoke to rise quickly to the top floor.
"My heart is in extreme pain. Why on earth did such violence have to be used?" company president Hatta Hideaki said.
Anime fans around the world expressed their anger and mourned for the victims. "It's a shock. It's like so impossible," said Levin Jean, an anime vendor in San Francisco. (AP)
