Seto gets 2 golds for Japan at swimming worlds
The final day of the FINA World Championships was held on July 28 in Gwangju, South Korea, where Seto Daiya won his third career gold medal in the 400-meter individual medley in 4 minutes, 8.95 seconds — his first in two meets. He is now provisionally set to compete in both the 200-meter and the 400-meter individuals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
On July 25, Seto became the first Japanese swimmer to win the gold in the 200-meter individual in either the world championships or the Olympics. He now has a total of four gold medals from the world championships, beating out former Olympic swimmer Kitajima Kosuke to become the Japanese swimmer with the most golds. He is also the first Japanese swimmer to win two golds in a single world championships since Kitajima in 2003.
In the men's 200-meter freestyle final held on July 23, Matsumoto Katsuhiro took silver with a time of 1 minute, 45.22 seconds, setting a new Japanese record. It was the first time that a Japanese swimmer has won a medal in the event in the world championships or the Olympics.
Seto also snagged the silver in the 200-meter butterfly, helping Japan come away with six bronze, two silver and two gold medals.
