'Smiling Cinderella' wins Women's British Open
MILTON KEYNES, England — Shibuno Hinako finished with a birdie to win the Women's British Open by one shot over Lizette Salas on Aug. 4 as she wrapped up a stunning major championship debut.
The 20-year-old Shibuno, a rookie on the Japan LPGA Tour who was playing for the first time outside of her country, birdied five of the final nine holes in a 4-under 68 to finish at 18-under 270 overall.
Shibuno — nicknamed "Smiling Cinderella" — is the second Japanese golf player to win a major, following Higuchi Hisako, who won the Women's PGA Championship in 1977.
"I was also thinking about if I were to make this putt, how I was going to celebrate," Shibuno said of approaching the 18th. "Eat a lot of sweets."
Shibuno was born in Okayama Prefecture and started golf at the age of 8. She passed the test to become a professional player last summer and won her first professional domestic title in May.
With the victory on Aug. 4, Shibuno surged to No. 14 in the world from No. 46, becoming more likely to appear at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
