HK student's death fuels more anger against police
HONG KONG (AP) — A Hong Kong university student who fell off a parking garage after police fired tear gas during clashes with anti-government protesters died on Nov. 8, fueling more outrage against authorities in Hong Kong.
At the parking garage in the Tseung Kwan O district, thousands waited in a long line to light candles and place white flowers and paper cranes at the spot where 22-year-old Chow Tsz-Lok fell.
There and in other areas, dozens of hard-core protesters later blocked roads, set street fires and vandalized subway stations.
On Nov. 11, a police officer drew his gun during a struggle with protesters, shooting one in the abdomen. In another neighborhood, a 57-year-old man was set on fire after an apparent argument.
Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam suggested harsher legal and police measures could be coming to stop the violent protests.
On Nov. 12, a few thousand protesters took over several blocks of the central business district. A 24-year-old demonstrator accused the police of using excessive force.
