音声を聞いてみよう

 東京在住の日米夫婦・健一とレイチェルが主人公。「これ英語で何て言うのかな?」を考えます。

棚に上げること pot calling the kettle black

Kenichi: You should think about getting rid of some of your books. They're taking up too much space in the apartment. My books take up less than a quarter of the space that your books do.

Rachel: This is a typical case of the pot calling the kettle black. It's true you own a small number of books, but look at all the space your records are taking up!

Kenichi: They're not taking nearly as much space as your books are in here.

Rachel: That's because records aren't as thick as most books are. If you count how many records you have as opposed to how many books I have, you might even have more than I do.

Kenichi: Why does that matter? Your belongings are still taking up much more space than mine are.

Rachel: It's not my fault that books generally take up more space than records do.

Kenichi: We just have too much stuff in this apartment.

Rachel: So are you saying either we reduce the number of things we own, or we move to a bigger place just to accommodate our belongings?

    Kenichi: No moving.

Rachel: Fine, then how about I get rid of some things if you do the same, too.

    Kenichi: OK.
