Artist Banksy funds boat to rescue migrants in Mediterranean
LONDON (AP) — Street artist Banksy confirmed on Aug. 29 that he has helped fund a ship to rescue migrants in distress in the Mediterranean Sea.
"Like most people who make it in the art world, I bought a yacht to cruise the Med," he wrote in captions accompanying a video of the ship on Instagram. "It's a French Navy vessel we converted into a lifeboat because EU authorities deliberately ignore distress calls from non-Europeans."
His ship "The Louise Michel" has been picking up groups of migrants in the central Mediterranean in what appeared to be its maiden rescue voyage. On Aug. 29, the crew tweeted that they needed "immediate assistance," and, "We are safeguarding 219 people with a crew of 10. Act #EU now!"
On the same day, the U.N. refugee agency urged European nations to let in hundreds of migrants rescued by the humanitarian ship, which was said to be "currently far beyond its safe carrying capacity."
The Italian coast guard said one of its vessels took 49 of the most vulnerable people off the ship to bring them to safety.
