COVID-19 vaccinations begin in US with huge effort
The biggest vaccination campaign in U.S. history kicked off on Dec. 14 as health workers rolled up their sleeves for shots to protect them from COVID-19 and start beating back the pandemic.
The campaign began the same day the U.S. death toll from the surging outbreak crossed the 300,000 threshold. The number of dead is more than five times the number of Americans killed in the Vietnam War.
Scientists' furious pursuit of a vaccine is finally delivering results, beginning with the rollout of Pfizer-BioNTech's vaccine approved in the U.S. on Dec. 11. With the authorization of a second vaccine developed by Moderna, 20 million people could be vaccinated by the end of the month.
A nurse at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York got the first shot given in the state's campaign to vaccinate frontline health care workers.
"I feel hopeful today. Relieved," said nurse Sandra Lindsay after getting a shot.
"This is the light at the end of the tunnel. But it's a long tunnel," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.
Britain, meanwhile, began vaccinations on Dec. 8. (AP)
