Photo Journal: Rich treat

Sixth-grade elementary school pupils enjoy the taste of "Yubari melons" as part of their school lunch in the city of Yubari in Hokkaido, on May 30, 2017. Yubari melons are renowned for their luxuriousness, and in the first auction of the fruit this year held in the city of Sapporo, a pair of the melons was sold for a staggering 1.5 million yen. During the special school lunch on May 30, a single Yubari melon was cut into 16 equal slices and then given to 32 pupils -- meaning that the cost of the melon per person worked out at about 47,000 yen. Predictably, the melon proved to be popular, with children saying comments such as, "It's sweet and it tastes great." (Mainichi)
