Tokyo reports 14,086 COVID infections on Jan. 26, sets new high for 2nd straight day

TOKYO -- The Japanese capital reported a record-high coronavirus case count for the second day in a row on Jan. 26 with 14,086 new infections, following 12,813 the day before.

    As of Jan. 26, there were 2,977 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 172 more than the previous day. Eighteen had severe symptoms, an increase of four. Some 42.8% of Tokyo's coronavirus-designated beds and 3.5% of beds for severe cases were occupied. There were five COVID-19 deaths reported, and total coronavirus fatalities in Tokyo stood at 3,190.

    COVID-19 cases have been rising in the capital amid a sixth wave of infections. Tokyo recorded an average of 338.6 infections per day in the first week of January, 1,950.4 per day in the second, and 6,193 in the third. In the entire month of December 2021, the capital saw 923 coronavirus infections, for a daily average of 29.8 cases. It registered 542 cases in November for an average of 18.1 cases per day.

    Tokyo has recorded 498,549 infections to date, the most among Japan's 47 prefectures.
